Metal and foreign contaminate detection of food when it is packaged in foil or metal can necessitates a completely different approach to metal detection. It would not be possible to detect metal inside of a foil pouch or metal food can with a conventional metal detector. This would be an application where an X-ray food metal detector would be used.
If Food Metal Detection is only a portion of the contaminate inspection for food packages then an X-ray Inspection systems should be used. Detection of foreign material and metal in food packages is performed with an x-ray beam which is located under the conveyor belt. The x-ray beam is focused at the bottom of the food package and is detected over head by an array detector. The resulting image is displayed on the control panel and the defective food package is automatically removed from the production line with a reject system.
The food x-ray detector can detect 0.8mm stainless steel test balls and 2mm glass test balls at 600 containers per minute!
