Hot Melt Glue Labelers are by far the most prevalent type of labeling technology used for labeling cans. 99% of all cans are labeled with a Hot Melt Glue Labeler. Because a can has very little visual appeal on its own almost all cans receive a "Full Wrap" Label which is the type of label a Hot Melt Labeler applies. Can labeling lines produce labeled product at high-speed, usually in the 400 to 1,400 cans per minute range which is why these labeling machines need to be a "Rotary" type of labeler. Another reason Hot Melt Labeling is used for cans is the low cost of the labeling material and glue. A recent development in Hot Melt Labeling is the utilization for low temperature melting glue that saves energy compared to older glue types. How a Hot Melt Labeler Works- With a Hot Melt Labeler, the labels are loaded in stacks into the labeler magazine. As the Can or Bottle rotates in the labeler a strip of hot melt glue is applied to the "pick up" area on the container. When the hot melt glued container contacts the label, the label sticks to the glue and as the container rotates and the label wraps around the container. Just before the end of the label, a second strip of hot melt glue is applied to the trailing edge of the label and this second glued edge of the label, overlaps the first glued section of the label and forms a "full wrap" body label.
